Children and young adults often have questions about God. The Holy Cross Parish Faith Formation program works with parents to answer these questions and to bring our young people into a closer relationship with God; a relationship which motivates them to make good moral decisions in order to live Christ-like lives. The school educates children within the Catholic faith and provides them with opportunities to develop the values, attitudes and skills that will enable them to become vital members of the community. Holy Cross Catholic School has been in existence for 141 years and has an enrollment of 195 students in grades EC3 to 8th grade. She's been baking kolaches, nut breads and other sweet treats since she was a child. At age 94, Sr. Germaine, a Sister of St. Francis of the Holy Cross, has made enough treats to fill a bakery - or two.

Her most recent delicacies were up for sale at the Bay Settlement Sisters' Bazaar last month. It's the fifth year the sisters have sponsored a bazaar to raise funds to help offset the cost of their new motherhouse.

Franciscan Sr. Germaine Paider shares a smile with a friend during the Bay Settlement Sisters’ Bazaar Nov. 14 at Holy Cross School in Bay Settlement. (Sam Lucero The Compass)Sr. Germaine sees her baking efforts going to a good cause. "It's one way to contribute" to the debt still owed on the motherhouse, she said. "I love to do it. I like to bake. I've been a teacher most of my life, but I've baked in between (assignments)."

She credits her mother for teaching her how to bake, especially the ethnic Bohemian treats such as kolaches.

But baking kolaches does not meet all the financial needs of the Bay Settlement Sisters, whose aging population requires more attention to health care. That is why they rely on assistance from Catholics through the annual Retirement Fund for Religious, held this year on Dec. 11 and 12.

Last year, the Bay Settlement Sisters received nearly $35,000 from the national collection to help meet their needs. They were the only religious community in the Green Bay Diocese to receive funding. The Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity in Manitowoc are among religious communities that contribute to the fund.

According to the National Religious Retirement Office, which oversees the annual appeal, there are more than 35,000 religious, mostly women, who are past age 70. More than 5,500 need skilled nursing care.

Since the Retirement Fund for Religious began in 1988, nearly $589 million has been raised to support aging religious like Sr. Germaine. Most of that money, between 80 and 90 percent, goes to direct care assistance of aged religious. The remaining goes to help religious orders implement long-term financial planning programs.

Sr. Germaine said she and the other Bay Settlement sisters are grateful for donations to the appeal.

"It's very important for us, especially now that we are in debt," she said. "It's very much appreciated by the sisters. We're all getting older and fewer (sisters) are working so we are caught up in a financial bind, more or less. So we're happy to get any help we can."

Despite the challenges, Sr. Germaine said religious life still offers young women a rewarding way of life.

"I've been in (religious life) now for 78 years. I left home when I was 15," she said. "It's been a good life. I love it."

Give to the Retirement Fund for Religious
What: 18th annual Retirement Fund for Religious
When: Dec. 12 and 13 (Note: The collection at Holy Cross Parish takes place on December 5 and 6.)
Where: Diocesan parishes

The Compass newspaper offers a lively mix of local, national and international Catholic news along with columns, spiritual reflections, and weekly Scripture readings. She loved spending time with her family and friends. She was an avid Packers Fan and enjoyed scrap booking. She was also known as the “coffee lady” from her days selling specialty coffees.

She will be sadly missed by her father George, her dear friends Stella and Diane, as well as many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her mother Mary.

Friends may call at Proko-Wall Funeral Home, 1630 East Mason Street on Monday December 7, 2009 from 3-4 pm. Andrew’s Baptism was delayed because of the flu, and so we happily welcome him into our faith this weekend. Congratulations are also in order for the Limoni and Olson families whose children Lauren, Jacob and Sam Limoni, along with their cousins, Benjamin and Melissa Olson, were Baptized at the 10 am Mass. We as a parish family have grown by 6 this weekend through the Waters of Baptism.

On Wednesday, Dec. 2, 28 children in our parish family received God’s forgiveness for the first time in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. On Saturday, Nov. 21, our children enjoyed an afternoon retreat experience, and then this past Wednesday they were joined by their families and the rest of our Holy Cross Parish Family during our Advent Penance Service. We thank you parents for the wonderful model that you are of the unconditional love and forgiveness of God to your children.

This Tuesday is December 8th, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Our country is dedicated to Mary under this title and thus this feast is the patron Feast of the United States of America and is a Holy Day of Obligation. Masses here at Holy Cross for this feast are at 8 am and 7 pm. This is a good opportunity for us to gather as individuals and as a parish family and pray for our country and to remember in a special way those men and women in the military, especially those in harm’s way. It is also a wonderful opportunity to say a few prayers for the member of the police, fire, emergency rescue teams, swat teams and others in public service who put their lives on the line so that we may be safe and free. Let us especially remember those police officers who were murdered last Sunday and their families who mourn their passing.

Please remember that next weekend we take up the annual collection for the retired sisters, brothers and priests. These were the people who educated us and built up the Catholic church in America and who labored for practically nothing and who are now in their old age and in need. Please be generous as many sister's communities depend on this annual collection.

Next weekend, Sunday, December 13th, is also our Annual Christmas Open House, 3 pm to 7 pm. This is a perfect opportunity to watch the Packers play, and then after the game to come to the rectory to begin the Christmas Season with other parishioners and join in with them for some food, recreational beverages and fellowship, and to sing some of the wonderful Christmas Carols along with our choir. If you have never toured the rectory, this is a good opportunity to do so and also to see some of the new renovations, especially the kitchen.

Mark your calendars - Monday, December 15th at 6:30 pm is our School Concert. Tuesday, December 16th is our Faith Formation Christmas Play in the church at 6:30 pm.

Oremus Pro Invicem,
Father Tom

Related link:
12.06.09 Church Bulletin

Readings for December 6, 2009: Second Sunday of Advent

Reading 1
Bar 5:1-9

Responsorial Psalm
Ps 126:1-2, 2-3, 4-5, 6

Reading 2
Phil 1:4-6, 8-11

Gospel
Lk 3:1-6

Returning to Jerusalem
Reflection on Sunday's readings from Fr. He commands each of the faithful who prays to do so universally, for the whole world. For he did not say "Thy will be done in me or in us," but "on earth," the whole earth, so that error may be banished from it, truth take root in it, all vice be destroyed on it, virtue flourish on it, and earth no longer differ from heaven.”
St. John Chrysostom, Hom. in Mt. 19, 5:PG 57, 280

What is Catholic Virtue Education?
Catholic Virtue Education focuses on teaching students and their families about Catholic virtue as outlined in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. While all of the virtues, works, gifts, fruits, and prayers are intricately intertwined into our Catholic Faith, Catholic Virtue Education at Holy Cross Catholic School focuses on certain aspects each month in order to enhance learning for all students, of all abilities, in all grades. Each month a new virtue is developed, and the students are involved in defining, discussing and exhibiting that trait in their daily lives. Principal Robin Jo Jensen includes reflections on the month's virtue in her weekly parent letter to spur discussions at home. At the end of the month parents are encouraged to attend a student-directed, all-school assembly focusing on the lessons taught throughout the month.

About Holy Cross Catholic School
Located on the growing northeast side of Green Bay at the historic crossroads of Church and Bay Settlement Roads, Holy Cross Catholic School is the point at which faith, community and education converge. Children and young adults often have questions about God. The Holy Cross Parish Faith Formation program works with parents to answer these questions and to bring our young people into a closer relationship with God; a relationship which motivates them to make good moral decisions in order to live Christ-like lives. Mine was delightful. I have enjoyed my friends, Dr. George and his wife Pat, celebrating the Thanksgiving Holiday with me. I also welcomed my Norbertine priest friends and others to my table where we gave thanks to Almighty God for His many Blessings to us. With Thanksgiving we begin our preparation for the Great Feast of Christmas, and thus this weekend is the First Sunday of Advent. Our readings this year are from the “C” cycle and Luke’s gospel begins this new Liturgical year by reminding us to be prepared so that we are not caught by surprise. We are reminded at the beginning of this Advent season that “No one is promised tomorrow” so remain vigilant, prepared and pray for God’s grace.

Please note that we as Catholics have a wonderful Sacrament that enables us to be well prepared for the coming of the Lord, the Sacrament of Reconciliation or Confession. Our Parish celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation is this Wednesday at 1 pm and 7 pm in the evening. Our young First Reconciliation and Eucharist children will make their first confession at the 7 pm service. All are welcome at both the 1 pm and 7 pm celebrations, and I have provided for a large number of priests to be here to serve you. Perhaps it has be a long, long, long time since you have gone to confession - open your heart and let the grace of God come in. I can guarantee you that not one of the priests who will be here will ever embarrass you, chide you, or make you uncomfortable in any way - as a matter of fact, I can guarantee you that after making your confession and receiving the GRACE of Christ you will feel like a new person. Why not plan to attend and go to confession? That is this WEDNESDAY AT 1 PM AND 7 PM.

PARISH CHRISTMAS OPEN HOUSE - SUNDAY, DECEMBER 13, 3 PM - 7 PM. This is our 5th Annual Christmas Open House - all are invited, all are welcome. Come and see the new Parish House Kitchen, tour the rectory, see the pastor’s private quarters, enjoy some food and drink, and begin the celebration of Christmas.

RETIREMENT FUND FOR RELIGIOUS COLLECTION, DECEMBER 12 & 13. This coming weekend we once again ask your support for the collection that helps the religious sisters, priests and brothers who for so many years worked in educating us in the way of the faith. As rising costs of medical care and other expenses increase, they continue to need our support. Please be generous in next week’s collection, envelopes are available for your use.

Oremus Pro Invicem,
Father Tom

Related link: This year we learned about the work of the House Of Hope. The House of Hope is owned by the St. Vincent DePaul Society and is a home where unwed mothers between the ages of 18 - 24 can turn for a safe and supportive place where young mothers learn to become competent adults and independent successful parents.

Last week on November 18 our Faith Formation families gathered for their Third Annual Thanksgiving Family Mass, and it was at that Mass where the donations which had been collected over the weeks and months were offered by the students during the Presentation. I am grateful for so many things as I am about to celebrate my 3d Thanksgiving with our Holy Cross Parish Family. I am especially grateful to you and for your. You are the primary educators in the faith of your child, and you allow me to share in that challenge and privilege. Thank you.

I hope your Thanksgiving holiday is wonderful, and that you are full of wonder at the marvels of God's loving presence in our lives. As we thank God for all the gifts He has given to us, let us also prayerfully renew our commitment to one another to work together in sharing our faith with your children.

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

About Holy Cross Faith Formation
All children in the Holy Cross Parish Family have the right and opportunity to be educated in their faith.
