August 8/9 From the Pastor's Desk...

My Dear Parishioners,

This weekend I ask you to give a warm Holy Cross Parish Family welcome to Father Dan Pekarske, a member of the Society of the Divine Savior, also know as Salvatorians. This weekend is our annual Mission Appeal, an appeal that takes place in every parish in the United States. Father Dan will preach at all the Masses this weekend and take time to tell us about his community’s work both in the United States and in their foreign Missions. There are envelopes in the ends of the pews for your use, and there will be a second collection next weekend - we ask you to be most generous.

This Sunday at 3 pm our neighbors, the Sisters of St. Francis of the Holy Cross, will celebrate a Mass here at Holy Cross honoring all the Jubilee Sisters. We as a parish community congratulate the Sisters who celebrate their Jubilee, hold them in prayer, and ask that God grant them many more years to serve in His kingdom here on earth. Celebrating their Jubilee this year are:

Sr. Mary Ellen Lowney, OSF - 70 years
Sr. Alice Malliet, OSF - 60 years
Sr. Martin Vandervest, OSF - 60 years
Sr. Renee Delvaux, OSF - 50 years
Sr. Jeanne VanderBloomen, OSF - 50 years

Please note that Saturday, August 15th, the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven, is NOT a Holy Day of Obligation this year because it falls on a Saturday.

Looking ahead in our calendar, please note that the weekend of August 29th and 30th is our annual collection to support the Seminarians of our Diocese. We are all aware of the acute shortage of priests in the United States and the need for young men to be willing to dedicate their lives to serve God’s people as a priest. We are fortunate to have a number of men in our Diocese who are willing to do this, but to educate and prepare them for this service is expensive, and so we ask you to be generous in your support. This is a collection in which we are investing in the future. We will be posting information about our Seminarians and this collection in the coming weeks, along with the special envelopes for the collection.

One final calendar note - please note that TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 1ST, 2009, IS THE FIRST DAY OF OUR NEW SCHOOL YEAR!

“Oremus pro invicem”
Fr Tom
