Holy Cross Catholic School Art Gallery

Art Teacher Mrs. Renee Zirbel passed along these pictures and descriptions of recent art classes at Holy Cross Catholic School:

Hi everyone! This is what is happening in the art room at Holy Cross Catholic School:

(ABOVE) Kindergarten just finished working on paper playground sculptures. Paper strips were manipulated and glued down to create a fun colorful design that represented the fun shapes and activities of a playground. The students also created St. Patrick’s day hats out of paper bowls.

(ABOVE) First grade created an etched stained glass design for Easter. They are currently being displayed on the glass by the main entrance.

Second grade will be starting a drawing using tints and shades. We will learn and practice new skills that will be used in a simple design.

Third graders are working on a spring themed paper weaving design.

(ABOVE)Fourth grade just finished a camouflage reptile design using chalk pastels. The reptile was created on separate paper and added to the picture using pop dots to give it a 3 dimensional look.

(ABOVE) Fifth grade finished a winter watercolor painting. Students had to apply the paint so that the white of the paper still showed in the snowy foreground. Shadows and perspective were used to show depth. The class is currently working on paper mache figures.

(ABOVE) Sixth grade finished Georgia O’Keeffe drawings that were done with chalk pastels. Abstraction of shape and blending of colors was used.

(ABOVE) Students are currently working on paper mache animals. They used a balloon as an armature. Cardboard shapes were added to help create a likeness to the animal they chose.

Seventh and Eighth grade are currently working on a digital camera scavenger hunt. Students have to find things around the school that will represent a given phrase that I have given them (ex. Something that changes shape, something that flashes, something spiritual). They had to choose 10 out of 12 phrases and, working with their group, photograph the idea. Each group will put their images into a power point presentation and present it to the class.

All of the grades are currently working on illustrations for the stories they are creating with the AiR program and Mr. Rockhill. Please send us your creative prayers!
