Weekly Catholic Virtue Reflection: Kindness

The 7th and 8th Grade students at Holy Cross Catholic School presented a very meaningful play for the April Catholic Virtue Assembly on Kindness. The play reinforced all of the things that the students learned during the month in a way that all of the children, regardless of age, could understand. Thank you to the 7th and 8th graders and Mr. Johnson, for a job well done!

KINDNESS by Bernadette Ballezza - July 28, 2003
We don’t always have to be brave.
Sometimes we lack valor.
We don’t always have to be fearless.
Sometimes we get lost in despair.
We don’t always have to be trusting.
Sometimes we have doubts.
We don’t always have to be right.
Sometimes we are to blame.
We don’t always have to be happy.
Sometimes we become disheartened.
We don’t always have to be the winner.
Sometimes we feel conquered.
We don’t always have to be infallible.
Sometimes we make mistakes.
We don’t always have to be grounded.
Sometimes we lose our way.
We don’t always have to be strong.
Sometimes we are fragile.
But we must always try to be kind.

May God bless you,

Robin Jo Jensen

Holy Cross School Catholic Virtue Education
Catholic Virtue Education focuses on teaching students and their families about Catholic virtue as outlined in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. While all of the virtues, works, gifts and fruits are intricately intertwined into our Catholic Faith, Catholic Virtue Education at Holy Cross Catholic School focuses on certain aspects each month in order to enhance learning for all students, of all abilities, in all grades. Each month a new virtue is developed, and the students are involved in defining, discussing and exhibiting that trait in their daily lives. Principal Robin Jo Jensen includes reflections on the month's virtue in her weekly parent letter to spur discussions at home. At the end of the month parents are encouraged to attend a student-directed, all-school assembly focusing on the lessons taught throughout the month.

Faith Formation Class Reaches Out to Golden House

Submitted by Marti Burkard.

Holding something warm and soft can be so comforting when you find yourself in a strange and scary place. Mrs. Kari Peterson's 5th Grade Faith Formation Class made the lives of Golden House residents a little more comfortable when they made blankets for the residents.

For a number of weeks during their class time, the children created brightly colored blankets to be given to the residents. Each of the 7 children created a blanket, and helped each other finish them up.

Thank you Mrs. Peterson and Dalton, Madison, Luke, Abby, Ashley, Austin and Kyle for reaching out to those who need to be comforted!

Congratulations First Communicants!

This weekend at the 4:00pm and the 10:00am Masses, 41 children received the Body and Blood of Jesus for the first time. Today is a day of rejoicing with their parents and siblings; our First Communicants can now share fully at the table of the Lord.

It is our prayer that our children will know the deep joy of sharing in communion today, and will want to share it often. It is also my prayer that we adults can deepen our resolve to live the joy of Eucharist in our families and neighborhood, at work and at play. Together, may the presence of the risen Christ so permeate our lives that the world can be transformed into the Kingdom of God. A glimpse of which we experience every time we gather around the table of the Lord.

Help Holy Cross Feed the Hungry

"For I was hungry and you gave me food. I was thirsty and you gave me drink. I was a stranger and you welcomed me." Matthew 25: 35-36.

Let us follow the example of Jesus and look ahead to May 9th when we feed the hungry at the NEW Community Shelter (Room at the Inn). Plan to make a stew, bars or jello for that day. What a perfect example of stewardship in action! Call Sylvia Corbeill at 468.0483 or Virginia Moreau at 866.2806 if you can help out.

USCCB Official Praises Senate Passage Of ‘Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act’

A press release posted to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Website.

WASHINGTON—The U.S. Senate voted 95 to 0 to pass the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (“GINA,” H.R. 493), which bars employers and health insurers from discriminating against individuals on the basis of their own or their family members’ genetic information, on April 24.

Deirdre McQuade, Assistant Director for Policy and Communications at the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ (USCCB) Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities, praised its passage.

“Today the Senate took a stand for some of the most vulnerable members of the human family, whether born, yet to be born, or placed for adoption. No one should be discriminated against on the basis of genetic testing,” McQuade said.

The House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed a nearly identical bill by a vote of 420 to 3 on April 25, 2007.

“The Pro-Life Secretariat is particularly grateful to Rep. Bart Stupak (D-MI) for ensuring that this bill’s protection against discrimination will cover the families of unborn children with adverse prenatal diagnoses, as well as children being adopted,” she said. “His advocacy on their behalf will empower families to welcome vulnerable children with special needs into their lives.”

“After minor technical differences between the House and Senate bills are resolved, we look forward to President Bush signing into law this important protection for American families,” McQuade said.

Meet the Teacher: Mrs. Shara Malone, Fourth Grade

Educational Background: Graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and majored in Elementary Education with a minor in Language Arts.

Teaching Experience: Mrs. Malone was a substitute teacher in the greater Green Bay area before coming to Holy Cross, including a long-term sub with De Pere Middle School. She joined the Holy Cross Catholic School staff in 2002. She has been the fourth grade teacher for the past four years.

At Holy Cross Catholic School since: 2001

Mrs. Malone commented on her classes: "I love teaching the fourth graders at Holy Cross School! This year, we have already completed a fun unit on Electric Circuits and created lit ‘Spooky Houses’ in October. In fourth grade, my students also learn about Wisconsin’s history and regions, and we take several field trips locally to see and learn more directly about Wisconsin’s history. Recently, my students made Family Recipe books of their favorite family foods, and we completed the unit by holding our annual Family Banquet with our loved ones. We were able to sample some of the many delicious foods in our recipe books – it was wonderful!

“But the best part is how we integrate our Catholic faith into everything we do, whether it is a community prayer at our Family Banquet, to planning and hosting a liturgy, to learning about the Catholic Jesuit missionaries during the time of the fur trade in Wisconsin."

What she likes about Holy Cross Catholic School: “The faculty, staff, families, and students of Holy Cross make our school one of the absolute best Catholic schools to attend in the region! They are why I so enjoy coming to teach everyday!”

Free time: Mrs. Malone and her husband, Rich, live in east De Pere. They have a “fur” baby named Scarlett (their Maine Coon cat, and also their joy). Mrs. Malone loves reading, traveling (especially to Walt Disney World), enjoying music of all genres, scrapbooking, tennis, badminton, and watching the Green Bay Packers of which they are both avid fans. Go Pack!

HCCS Auction to Feature this Handmade Cross-Stitch Quilt!

Submitted by Heather Zeise.

This gorgeous quilt called "American Sampler" was embroidered by Marge Giesler over a period of several years, with numerous hours dedicated to creating beautiful stitchery. Marge is grandma to Holy Cross students, Leslie and Erin Giesler.

Hoping to donate the quilt to the school auction, Marge called upon the help of Pat Davister, Sue Davister, Connie Brownell, Mary Cook and Virginia Moreau.

Over a period of eight weeks, working whenever time permitted, these ladies hand stitched and finished this quilt. An enormous amount of time and talent was dedicated to creating this one of a kind heirloom quality quilt. It is a beautiful work of art! This is a queen size quilt measuring approximately 85" x 103" and is made with 100% cotton batting and backing. Donor: Marge Giesler & Friends.

The Holy Cross Catholic School Hand in Hand Auction is Saturday, May 3, 2008 at 5:00 PM at the Riverside Ballroom. You can reserve your tickets by calling 468.0625.

Weekly Catholic Virtue Reflection

This week, I would like to use my virtue reflection space to ask for your prayers for our Second Grade students in both our school and in our Faith Formation program, as they prepare for their First Holy Communion this weekend. I ask you to pray for them as they prepare themselves for this most holy sacrament of receiving the Eucharist. The Eucharist is the “source and summit of the Christian life." While this will be the children's “first” Communion, we hope and pray that it will be only the beginning of a lifelong celebration of the sacrament. Please consider attending either the 4:00PM or 10:00AM Mass this weekend to witness and celebrate this awesome experience with the children of our Parish family.

Prayer at a Child's First Communion
Lord Jesus Christ, in the Sacrament
of the Eucharist You left us the outstanding
manifestation of your limitless love for us.
Thank You for giving our child the
opportunity to experience this love
in receiving the Sacrament for the first time.
May your Eucharist presence keep him/her
ever free from sin, fortified in faith,
pervaded by love for God and neighbor,
and fruitful in virtue, that he/she may continue
to receive You throughout life and
final union with You at death. Amen.

Faith Formation parent evaluations
By now you have all received an evaluation form for our Faith Formation Program, both by regular mail and in an e-mail attachment. PLEASE take a moment to fill that out for me while this past year is still fresh in your mind. Your input is so important as we look to planning for next year. Thank you in advance!

Scrip credit for Faith Formation tuition
Holy Cross Scrip is excited to announce that beginning June 1, 2008, Faith Formation families will be able to earn credit towards their 2008-2009 Faith Formation tuition through Scrip purchases.

What is Scrip? Holy Cross Scrip is a fundraising program that earns money for our day school and Faith Formation families, through your purchases of gift cards and certificates at face value for your favorite store, gas station, and restaurants. These merchants have offered their gift cards and certificates at a discounted rate to Holy Cross. When you purchase them at face value, the difference between the face value and the discounted rate is then recognized by our program.

It costs you nothing more than what you already spend on gas, groceries, clothing, etc., yet you save money on your tuition. It doesn’t get any better than that!

On purchases made by Faith Formation families with outstanding tuition, 59% of the proceeds will be credited to their outstanding tuition and 40% of the proceeds will credited to the parish.

On purchases made by those who have paid their tuition in full for the school year, 99% of the proceeds will be credited to the parish. {The remaining 1% in each scenario covers shipping/handling expenses.}

How will credits be applied? Currently families with children enrolled in Faith Formation have the option of paying their tuition three different ways. The first option is to pay in full at registration. The second option is to pay half their tuition at registration and the other half in January. The third option is to pay 1/3 of their tuition at registration, 1/3 in November and the final 1/3 in March.

If you are utilizing one of our partial payment options, the revenue earned on your Scrip purchases made between June 1 and August 1, 2008, will be shown on your first tuition statement. If the Scrip credit is less than the installment payment due, you will be required to pay the difference. If the Scrip credit is greater than the installment payment due, no payment will be due and the excess funds will be applied toward your next installment. Revenue earned on Scrip purchases made after the August 1 date will be reflected on the next statement you receive. Again, if the Scrip credit is less than the installment payment due, you will be required to pay the difference. If your balance is paid in full when Scrip credits are distributed, revenue earned on your Scrip purchases will be credited to Holy Cross Parish.

How can I purchase Scrip? Scrip is available for sale after most masses in the room at the back of church. An order form is on the reverse side of this letter.

Still have questions? E-mail us at scrip@holycrossfamily.org or call Scrip Coordinator Jan Kratz at 468-3517.

Peace and all good,
Marti

Homily Reflections: In My Room

Excerpted from Fr. Tom Hagendorf's April 19/20 homily and featuring his favorite tune, In My Room, by the Beach Boys.

"Jesus said to his disciples: 'Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have faith also in me. In my Father’s house there are many rooms. If there were not, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back again and take you to myself, so that where I am you also may be. Where I am going you know the way.'" John 14:1-4

We all want to have room – a room of our own where we can feel safe, comfortable, and secure from the world. Without room we feel exposed to the wild, unpredictable world. Without room we feel unwanted.

Jesus knew this feeling and so on the last night of his life, gathered with his Apostles and Disciples in the upper room. As he began to talk of his departure, he assured them he was not abandoning them. He would prepare “ROOM” especially for them. It was a special promise, warm with its allusion to that safe and sacred place we all long to have.

Jesus's assurance was comforting to his disciples and is a comfort to us. There is ROOM for us!

We are loved. We are wanted.

And where is this room? In our own hearts! And so we make room for God in our lives while we live here on earth, and Jesus makes a room for us in Heaven.

Our Holy Cross Parish Youth Stewardship program is a tool available for us to help teach the basics of stewardship to our youth. Stewardship is a decision we make to live as Christians and to thank God for all of His blessings by helping to take care of the church and the world on behalf of God. Stewardship is often touched upon throughout the Bible and in our faith formation process; the Youth Stewardship Program helps bring all of these teachings together.

April 18/19 From the Pastor's (Business Manager's) Desk...

Dear Parishioners,

One of my goals is to keep you informed as to the “business” of your parish, and I hope to be able to do this quarterly.

To finish up on ATM, as of the most recent bank statement from March 31, we currently have a balance of $25,095.84 in our investment account, which reflects monies paid in to the account, interest earned, and the spending of $18,357.60 for the new rectory windows. We have an estimate of approximately $14,000 to restore the school windows, which will occur over the summer when school is not in session. To finish the window project, approximately $4,000 has been allocated for new window treatments in the rectory. The windows have been measured and new room-darkening shades have been ordered that will be reminiscent of the period of the rectory. We are still considering draperies and sheers, but a decision will be made soon.

From time to time, parishioners give monetary gifts for specific needs of the parish. We have used approximately $900 to upgrade our computer systems. Father has a new color printer, scanner, copier. He also has Office 2003 on his computer. Through an arrangement with the company that produces our bulletin, I have a new computer and recently upgraded to Office 2007. I had a color printer not being used at home, which I have donated to the parish so that I, too, have color printing capability. I have also upgraded our Parish Data System (PDS) software, as the current version we were using is no longer supported by the company. We are working diligently to update this system, which is in quite a disarray, as you were made aware when 2007 year-end statements were issued. We will be asking all parishioners to review the information we currently have and ask for corrections and updates in the very near future. This will help us immensely to determine the size our parish, on which certain Diocesan assessments are made. For instance, Holy Cross Parish has a goal of $34,052 for the Bishop’s Appeal. To date, we have received pledges or gifts of $21,394. The amount not paid by parishioners must be paid by the parish, so your assistance in meeting our goal is much appreciated. Pledge cards and envelopes are available in the parish office.

Finally, please note that we have made some changes with respect to sacrificial giving envelopes. Beginning in May, you will see a new style of envelope, which we will be mailing quarterly rather than monthly (but for this period prior to our fiscal year-end, you will just receive May and June), saving us quite a bit in postage, and we have included some new envelopes. The first is a “business reply envelope” for you to mail your gift to the parish if you so desire. The second is that each quarter there will be a special envelope for either fuel costs or maintenance & repairs. Any donations you can make will help us balance our budget.

Lori A. Flanagan,
Business Manager

With Sympathy on Behalf of the Holy Cross Parish Family

Mrs. Mary K. (Ceronsky) Tews, 65, Green Bay, died unexpectedly, Sunday, April 13, 2008, following a short illness while vacationing in Florida. Mobile computer lab delivers for Holy Cross students

-- Fund-raisers net $30,000 in support of technology upgrades --

Reprinted from the January 25, 2008 edition of The Compass.
By Jeff Kurowski, Compass Assistant Editor

BAY SETTLEMENT -- Holy Cross School added a new computer lab this year, but visitors won't find new construction or building renovations. The new lab is on wheels.

The mobile computer lab features new HP laptop computers. Students grab a computer off the cart, log in and go to work.

"It was a little daunting at the beginning of the year," said Deanna Schauer, Holy Cross computer instructor. "I spent a lot of time setting up rules for the lab. We had some glitches, but the students have really done a good job. I'm thrilled with their progress."

Computer classes for grades one through eight are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Teachers may sign out the lab for lessons on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Jason Johnson, who teaches fifth through eighth grade social studies and science, has utilized the lab extensively in his classroom.

"The seventh and eighth grade classes, for example, did reports (PowerPoint using a media projector) on countries in Latin America and South America involving standards-based research," he said. "Our textbooks are older. They have good information, but not current information. The students were able to find the most current information about their country on the Internet. The project was very student centered. They taught the rest of the class about their country."

Eighth grader Nathan Meyers did his report on Haiti and the Dominican Republic. He did his first PowerPoint presentation in the fifth grade, when he brought in his own laptop. He likes the convenience of the mobile computer lab.

"We just grab a laptop and bring it upstairs," he said. "These computers are a little better than my own laptop. It's fun working on them. The more you experiment, the more you learn."

Using the Internet for research made the reports on the countries more interesting, he added.

"I liked seeing what everyone else was doing," he said. "I was able to find some pictures and show what life is like for the people there. We are very fortunate in our country. Having the newer technology made the research easier and it makes you more confident in your work."

Jo Sato, who teaches math to grades 5-8, doubles as the tech support person at Holy Cross. Sato set up two wireless hubs in the school so the computers do not require cords or cables.

"We thought we would have to transport a hub throughout the building," she said. "We set one up on each end of the building and it's worked out pretty well. The only place we've found where we don't have good wireless access is in the gym, but we can use a long cable there if necessary."

Another challenge was getting the lab ready for the students she added. "You have to configure all of the computers and set up accounts for all the students so it doesn't matter which laptop they are using," she said.

Johnson said he hopes to have the students use the Internet more for current events in addition to research projects. He has utilized the technology in both social studies and science.

"I can show bacterial growth by finding a live culture on the Internet," he said. "We watched this bacteria cell multiply 600 times in an hour. If we use a microscope, we can only look at one slide. The media projector is very helpful. My favorite thing is everything is more visual. It's not just students listening to Mr. Johnson talk. They are able to see the things I'm talking about."

Sixth grader Rachel Shilbauer, who hopes to use her computer skills in her career as a fashion designer, can relate. She did a report on Algeria and incorporated artwork she found online into her presentation.

"I didn't have to look at all the people staring at me," she said. "We were able to look at the screen."

In addition to the laptops in the mobile computer lab, Holy Cross has 10 new Panasonic Toughbooks for use by faculty and staff. The units were donated by Integrys.

The mobile computer lab was made possible through fund-raisers, which netted $30,000, including two $5,000 matches by donors.

"This never could have been done without the support of the parents," said Schauer. "As Catholics, we are asked to give and give some more, and these families are always stepping forward. They are investing in the future of their children. Our mindset, especially for the middle school students, is to prepare them for high school and even college."

About Holy Cross Faith Formation
All children in the Holy Cross Parish Family have the right and opportunity to be educated in their faith. Children and young adults often have questions about God. April 12/13 From the Pastor's (Business Manager's) Desk...

Dear Parishioners,

The letter the next two weeks will come “From the Business Manager’s Desk.” After two months in my new role, Fr. Tom and I thought it time for me to borrow this space and help you get to know me better.

First, thank you to all of you who have stopped by to welcome me to my new position. Everyone has been so warm and welcoming, and I am truly enjoying my new role. The daily mail delivery by the school kids brightens my day. Holy Cross School is doing an excellent job raising up awesome Christian students. I am quickly finding that Holy Cross Parish is a very vibrant and active community. I have not had a dull moment since starting this job!!

My husband, Mike, and I have been very active members of Resurrection Parish for the past 20 years. After living in Allouez for 17 years, we moved to New Franken three years ago. Two of our three young adult children also live with us at this time. I truly believe that this is where God wants me to be at this time in my life, since my qualifications for this job encompass so many of my past experiences and education.

My role as Business Manager includes keeping you informed about the business of your parish. For the next two weeks, I will attempt to answer the question, “What’s going on with Advancing the Mission?” If I haven’t answered all your questions, though, please feel free to give me a call or drop me an e-mail at holycross@new.rr.com.

The last report received from the Diocese on March 31, 2008, showed that 192 Holy Cross parishioners have pledged a total of $366,155.66, with a total amount paid in of $127,330.78. Holy Cross’ portion of the income is held in an investment account maintained by the Diocese where the funds continue to grow. As of February 29, 2000, we had a total value in the investment account of $41,513.80. In March, work was completed to replace the Rectory windows at a total cost of $18,357.60, reducing the amount in our investment account to approximately $23,156.20. The windows in the school are scheduled for replacement this summer.

More next week!

Meet the Teacher: Mrs. Jo Sato, Sixth to Eighth Grade Math/Algebra

Education:
• BA Mathematics and Secondary Education from St. Norbert College
• 18 graduate math credits from University of Virginia – Charlottesville
• BS Aeronautical Engineering from Air Force Institute of Technology
• MS Computer Science from SUNY – Utica

Experience: “I am a retired Major of the United States Air Force. The majority of my duties in the Air Force were as a Systems Engineer working on Theater Missile Defense programs. In the course of my military career, I worked every aspect of system acquisition, from writing contract specifications, monitoring development tests, briefings (at all levels), developing Mission Need Statements and so on. I draw from my military experiences in the classroom in many ways. I like to think the military experiences, as well as being mom to three adventurous boys, taught me patience and understanding for the many who do not share my love for math.”

At Holy Cross Catholic School since: 2001

Mrs. Sato commented on her classes: I am homeroom teacher for 18 sixth graders. They are a wonderful group and worked very hard on leading the school assembly to teach the virtue of patience. They also worked together to lead the school in collecting items needed for “Freedom House.” Every couple of months they perform the liturgical roles for the all school Mass.

“I teach Math to grades 6 through 8. Grade 7 learns Pre-algebra and grade 8 is taught Algebra. Each day they are given a timed fact sheet, warm up problems along with the lesson for the day. Even with small classes, the range of ability is vast. Before students are given their math homework for the day, I make sure that each student has worked out at least one example of each type of problem. The “eyes” blatantly echo understanding or total lack there of.”

Mrs. Sato’s teaching philosophy: The most valuable professional advice I ever received was from one of my first military supervisors. He said “The best you can hope for in life is that when you’re up to bat the game hasn’t changed to football.” I keep that in mind as I teach. I hope that I am helping my students learn to think for themselves and develop the skills they need to adapt to the changes life has to offer. I’ve been blessed with wonderful students. I know I’ve learned a lot from them and believe they will be great leaders. We are never done learning. I hope to continue, for a long time, to have as much fun in the classroom as I’ve had the last few years.

Focus on Faith: Faith Formation Family Newsletter

Happy Spring from Faith Formation!

A sure sign of Spring here at Holy Cross is the arrival of our Holy Cross Auction! I could never have known what a huge undertaking this is, and the many, many hours of volunteer time that go on behind the scenes to pull it off.

It reminds me of an old song that we used to sing many years ago when I attended St. Joe's Catholic School in Sturgeon Bay. It was called "God loves a Cheerful Giver." (2 Corinthians 9:7) Looking back on that song now I think what a wonderful scripture verse, yet it is as difficult as it is simple. Do we often give with expectation of return? Do we give out of obligation at times?

Allow me to share with you a TRUE story that took place at St. Rose Parish in Clintonville. It was my very 1st job as Director of Religious Education, and they were having an auction as part of their parish picnic. I was working under the auction tent and met a woman who had donated a gift worth $45.00. Every hour or so she checked the bidding to see how high it was going. At the end of the afternoon the auction was closed and the highest bidders were given their items and they paid at the table.

The woman stood near the table, watching for her item and the person who bid the highest. A young woman (who was also a Catechist in the R.E. program), who had the item walked up and was making out a check for $30.00. It was the highest bid. The older woman was outraged! She told my friend that she got a bargain, and it was worth much more than that. She stormed out of the auction tent. My friend was surprised and said to myself and the rest of those who had witnessed the confrontation, "I didn't know its worth; I was just giving from the heart."

I would like to personally invite each and every one of you to our Holy Cross auction. Did you know that last year the auction raised $60,000 for our school and parish?? That is remarkable and it's something that all of us ultimately benefit from. Perhaps you could contribute time, talent or resources. Tickets are available individually, or by tables of 8. Those who give with joy are blessed beyond measure. Let's work together to help make this event a huge success for our Holy Cross family!

Weekly Catholic Virtue Reflection: Kindness

Kindness is being supportive and responding to the needs of others with care and compassion. We can show kindness by listening when people talk about their problems. We can be caring and generous when people need our help. Imagine how you might feel in other people’s situations, and be grateful to others who care about you.

“No act of kindness, however small, is ever wasted.” --Aesop

May God bless you during this Easter season, and always,

Principal

The next HCCS Catholic Virtue Assembly will take place on Friday, April 18 at 2 PM in the school gym.

What is Scrip?
(Excerpted from the Great Lakes Scrip website)
When your organization members purchase scrip, they're purchasing negotiable gift certificates that are used just like cash. The scrip is issued by the national and local retailers where many of your organization families already shop. These merchants want to support non-profit organizations, and in return ask you to support them by shopping with scrip at their stores. Your organization members can use scrip to purchase everyday expenses like food, clothing, and other essentials, and with every purchase, they earn revenue for your organization.

Pope to Remind US Catholics of Church's Universality

Archbishop Wuerl Says Pontiff Will Challenge Faithful

ROME, APRIL 7, 2008 (Zenit.org).- The archbishop of Washington, D.C., is expecting Benedict XVI's arrival to the United States this month to remind Catholics there that they are part of the universal Church.

"We look forward to the Holy Father's visit," Archbishop Donald Wuerl told ZENIT in an interview Friday, "because he will confirm our faith and I think he will challenge us to live the Gospel as fully as we should; so we look forward to Peter coming and being with us."

The archbishop added that the faithful in the United States also "look forward to the connectedness that he will remind us is ours because of him, because of the apostolic tradition, because we are part of the Church."

The Pontiff's visit, from April 15 to 20, will include many opportunities for Benedict XVI to speak, and address various audiences. He will address President George Bush when he visits the White House on April 16, later the same day he will participate in a prayer service and meeting with the nation's 350 bishops.

The next day the Pope will celebrate Mass at the new Nationals Park in Washington, meet with the heads of more than 200 Catholic colleges and universities at the Catholic University of America, and then meet with interreligious leaders at the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center.

Friday through Sunday in New York, the Holy Father will address the United Nations, attend a prayer service with Christian leaders of various denominations, celebrate the Eucharist with priests, deacons and religious at St. Patrick's Cathedral, meet with youth at St. Joseph Seminary in Yonkers, visit Ground Zero, and preside over the closing Mass at Yankee Stadium.

Although the message the Pontiff will bring to the American people hasn't been divulged, the archbishop speculated: "I suspect when he is at the Nationals Park he will be talking about all the things that we need to be encouraged to live out. I think he will be talking about the importance of our faith.

"I hope he will say something about families, family life. I hope, I think he will say something about the value, the dignity of life; I think he will probably challenge us and lead us to the Gospel."

Renewal
While media reports highlight the divisions and tensions of the Church in the United States, Archbishop Wuerl disagrees. He says he has the "sense of the Church beginning to be renewed. There are always problems because we are a very secular and a very, very material country, but at the same time I am seeing among many, many young people a sense of re-appreciating the Gospel and re-appreciating the voice of the Church, the teaching of the Church.

"So I think it could be a moment of the great grace."

The Pontiff's schedule during his U.S. trip includes four stops dedicated to building interreligious dialogue. After both the meeting with interreligious leaders in Washington, D.C., and ecumenical leaders in New York, Benedict XVI will meet with Jewish representative to present to them his greetings for the feast of Passover, which begins for the Jewish people on April 19.

Archbishop Wuerl explained that interreligious dialogue is a priority not just for Benedict XVI, but for all. "I think it is important that we be able to build good relationships with all of the religions around us, you do that by dialogue, you do that by conversation.

"There is sense of mutual understanding, and out of that comes mutual respect. And this is a way just to build a better world."

Regarding the achievements of Pope John Paul II in the area of interreligious dialogue, he said: "I think Pope John Paul II demonstrated a great openness to dialogue; he spent a lot of time in dialogue with religions over the world, so I think he set a good example."

About Holy Cross Faith Formation
All children in the Holy Cross Parish Family have the right and opportunity to be educated in their faith. Children and young adults often have questions about God. The Holy Cross Parish Faith Formation program works with parents to answer these questions and to bring our young people into a closer relationship with God; a relationship which motivates them to make good moral decisions in order to live Christ-like lives.

Holy Cross Parish Youth Stewardship Corner

I shared my TIME and TALENT by:

- I visited my sick Aunt in the hospital
- I helped fold the laundry
- I cooked meals for my family
- I emptied the dishwasher and did the dishes
- I gave Jonas a drink, the heating pad and a blankie when he hurt his ankle
- I helped my dad and showed my brother how to buckle his new car seat

Total TREASURE shared: $2.50

Our Holy Cross Parish Youth Stewardship program is a tool available for us to help teach the basics of stewardship to our youth. Stewardship is a decision we make to live as Christians and to thank God for all of His blessings by helping to take care of the church and the world on behalf of God. Stewardship is often touched upon throughout the Bible and in our faith formation process; the Youth Stewardship Program helps bring all of these teachings together.

April 05/06 From the Pastor's Desk...

My Dear Parishioners,

Our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI will visit our country on Tuesday, April 15th until Sunday, April 20th. Kindly keep his visit in your prayers that he may has a safe journey and that we as a nation may benefit from his presence in our country. This can be a wonderful opportunity for us to celebrate our heritage as Roman Catholics.

You can get the latest information, catch video highlights and participate in the official blog for the Pope’s visit at http://www.uspapalvisit.org/ If you have cable you will be able to catch live coverage by tuning in to ETWN’s TV or radio network from April 15th to the 20th. The schedule is posted on their website: http://www.ewtn.org/USPapalVisit08/index.asp

For your information I will be gone from the parish from after the 10 am Mass next Sunday, April 13th until Friday, April 18th. It has been a long time since I have taken some time off and this appears to be a good opportunity for me to get away for some relaxation time. While I am gone, Deacon Dick will conduct liturgy of the Word and communion service at 8 am on Wednesday through Friday.

The weekend of April 26th and 27th will be a special weekend for Holy Cross Parish because at parish Masses that weekend, our young children, who have been preparing since last September, will be making their First Holy Communion. These children have been attending Mass each weekend, have been learning the prayers of the Mass, have been receiving a special blessing at Communion time and have been praying for our Holy Father and our parish. Please hold these children and their families in prayer as they prepare for this special moment in their lives. Let us also pray that this First Holy Communion will be the beginning of a life long practice of coming to the Table of the Lord to receive the “Bread of Life.”

Oremus pro invicem,
Fr. Tom

Holy Cross Church Needs Spring Cleaning

Please mark your calendars: Friday, April 18th, immediately following the school children's mass at 9:00AM. If you have one hour of time to assist with the cleaning, we would greatly appreciate it. Bring with you a pail, a few rags, and a smile. This is a great opportunity to visit with old and new church families. Hope to see you there!

Learning is FUN for Sr. Carolyn's Second Grade Class

Submitted by Sr. Carolyn Zahringer.

The second grade class at HCCS has had a FUN and exciting couple of months!

We had a Hundreds Day Celebration...
Hundreds day fell on Thursday, February 11, 2008. Grade two had a birthday that day, so we had double reason to celebrate. Each student was asked to bring 100 edible items to be shared in the class trail mix. The mix was quite good. The students had fun sorting what they got in their scoop serving!

We wrote about what we would do if we had $100. We had creative ideas like: help a poor person, put it in a college fund, buy something for the family, and of course some "personal" items like Game Boys and X-Boxes made it into the listing as well.

Each student was challenged to find 100 words in the classroom that they could read and possible even spell at this stage of grade two!

We discovered a "curious" EC-4 visitor...
Curious George made his way across the hall for a recess visit one day after lunch! Thanks George for being "curious" about our side of the hall!

And we made ice cream (and ate it too)!
March 4th was a lesson in making ice cream. Kris Meulemans from the Brown County Dairy Promotions Committee came for a visit to share how important calcium is in a child's diet.

We experienced making our own ice cream treat in small balls that transformed the recipe ingredients into luscious vanilla ice cream!

The tasting was the highlight!

When the work is done...
the second graders truly enjoy spending time searching to find things in the "I Spy" books. It seems they are always in demand!

Book Review: Rohr’s challenge: Change your life through Scripture

By Jean Peerenboom

Things Hidden: Scripture as Spirituality by Richard Rohr (St. Anthony Messenger Press; $19.95)

Read Richard Rohr’s latest book slowly and carefully. Things Hidden requires meditation. It challenges readers to think differently about the Scriptures and how they apply to life in 2008.

The book is good. It’s tough on us and it’s not always pleasant to hear or think about what Rohr says. He delves into what the Bible says about morality, power, wisdom and the generosity of God in a way that requires a life-changing reaction. As the book jacket says, “He offers a Christian vision of abundance, grace and joy to counteract a world filled with scarcity, judgment and fear – a vision that can revolutionize how we relate to ourselves, others and the world.” It’s an invitation to move into a life of joy and obedience to God.

One of the chapters that really touched me was called “Evil’s Lie.” Rohr says we always seem to think the problem is someone else. “We tend to export our hate and evil elsewhere. In fact, this problem is so central to human nature and human history that its overcoming is at the heart of all spiritual teaching. What mature spirituality tries to do is always keep your feet to the fire …”

He goes on to say, “Hating, fearing or diminishing someone else holds us together.” We need victims and scapegoats, and some people do this in the name of religion, which takes away their guilt.

In another chapter, Rohr delves into Jesus as scapegoat, but the chapter on evil ends with “Jesus, forgiver.” Jesus has no part in this “myth of redemptive violence,” even though that situation is prevelant in much of the Bible – conquering the Promised Land, wars of the kings of Israel, Saul, David, Herod, etc. But Jesus’ story is a pattern of “redemptive forgiveness.”

Rohr goes on to explore how Jesus opposed violence by diminishing the very things people absolutize. He does this by relativizing things that almost everyone idealizes: group identity, security system or occupation and the nuclear family and so-called family values, “which are often used as a defense mechanism against the larger spiritual family.”

Other topics are power, love, the mystery of the cross, our being the image and likeness of God, and, of course, forgiveness.

Things Hidden is not an easy read, but it is certainly a worthwhile one. Some chapters are stronger than others, but I suspect it all depends on what aspects of spirituality and morality tug at your heartstrings.

Weekly Catholic Virtue Reflection: Kindness

How do we reach out to others in Kindness? What does it truly mean to live the virtue of Kindness? How can we make the world a better place by living the virtue of Kindness?

The Encarta Dictionary defines Kindness as: kind – ness (noun) 1. the ability to behave kindly; the practice of being or the tendency to be sympathetic and compassionate. Synonyms of Kindness are: compassion, sympathy, gentleness, kindheartedness, thoughtfulness, consideration, helpfulness. May we truly learn and live this virtue of Kindness this month.

I share a simple but profound quote with you:
“Kind words can be short and easy to speak but their echoes are truly endless.” Mother Theresa

May God bless you,
Robin Jo Jensen
