Weekly Catholic Virtue Reflection from HCCS Principal Robin Jo Jensen: Goodness and Gentleness

The Apostle Paul illustrates Gentleness by the example of a mother nourishing her children (I Thessalonians 2:7). Gentleness is a quality that makes you great in God's sight (II Samuel 22:36).

Goodness is holiness put into practice and results from knowing God. Once you have this knowledge, Goodness is supernaturally produced in you (Romans 15:14). Goodness enables you to do good to those who hate you (Luke 6:27) as well as those of the household of faith (Galatians 6:10). It is the Goodness of God that leads men to repentance. That's why we need to be good to people. Our witness won't have any power unless we are kind. We are called to be Light in a dark world, and we must make up our minds that we are going to shine!

Thank you for your support of HCCS!
May God Bless Holy Cross Catholic School, and may we continue to “Light the Way” in Catholic Education, for another 139 years,

Robin Jo Jensen
Principal

Holy Cross School Catholic Virtue Education
Catholic Virtue Education focuses on teaching students and their families about Catholic virtue as outlined in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. While all of the virtues, works, gifts and fruits are intricately intertwined into our Catholic Faith, Catholic Virtue Education at Holy Cross Catholic School focuses on certain aspects each month in order to enhance learning for all students, of all abilities, in all grades. Each month a new virtue is developed, and the students are involved in defining, discussing and exhibiting that trait in their daily lives. Principal Robin Jo Jensen includes reflections on the month's virtue in her weekly parent letter to spur discussions at home. At the end of the month parents are encouraged to attend a student-directed, all-school assembly focusing on the lessons taught throughout the month.

HCCS Principal Robin Jo Jensen's Address to the Holy Cross Parish Family

Presented at all Masses on January 26/27, 2008.

Good Morning!

Thank you Father Tom for allowing me the privilege of addressing our Parish Family, as we begin our celebration of Catholic Schools Week.

For those of you that do not know me, I am Robin Jo Jensen, the principal of our parish school, Holy Cross Catholic School. This is my second year as the full-time principal at our school. Prior to being principal, I taught Physical Education and Health and was our Parish Athletic Director. I have truly been blessed to have been called by God to serve in my educational ministry here at Holy Cross for the past 12 years. My husband Jeff and I have been members of Holy Cross Parish for 17 years. Both of our children, Ashley and Marty, are graduates of Holy Cross Catholic School, so I know first hand the benefits of the Catholic education received at Holy Cross.

The history and tradition of Holy Cross education
Our parish school began “teaching as Jesus did” in 1868; we will mark 140 years of Catholic education at Holy Cross in 2008! Consider the hundreds of children that have received a Catholic education because of the love, support and generosity of Holy Cross Parish members, just like you. Our parish family should take a great deal of pride in the longevity of our parish school and the high quality education that these children have received, thanks to the generosity of our parish families, for the past 139 years.

Saved by the “Grace” of God and embracing a bright future
As you know, based on the directives derived from the Diocesan “GRACE” proposal, our school was slated to be closed at the end of the 2005/2006 school year. Our parish and school families pulled together, combined their efforts, researched, responded positively, and ultimately “saved our school"! We have been commended by the Diocese, both publicly and privately for the way that Fr. Tom, parish and school leadership, and school and parish families positively reacted and responded to the challenging situation that our school was presented with. By the “Grace” of God and the hard work and dedication of our Parish Family, we were successful. This is only one example of the tenacious dedication and deep love that Holy Cross Parish has for its parish school. We are now a part of the current school system initiative, known as "Faith Alive”, and we will be a part of Catholic Education in the greater Green Bay Area, as this initiative progresses.

The primary goal of the Holy Cross Catholic School Community is to announce the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to educate the WHOLE child, Spiritually, Intellectually, Physically, Socially and Emotionally.

I am pleased to announce that we currently have 165 students enrolled in our school in Early Childhood through Grade 8. When Red Smith Public School opened in our neighborhood, we saw a decline in enrollment at our school. However, we have rebounded from that temporary decline and are experiencing substantial and stable growth. We have 32 students in our Early Childhood programs, 81 students in our primary grades and 52 students in our middle school program. We have seen significant growth and retention in our middle school over the past few years. This is due to the strides we have taken to strengthen that program with quality middle school teachers, improved curriculum, athletics and extra-curricular activities.

The Faith Integration Program
The spiritual education of our children is the focus of everything that we do at HCCS. Simply stated, the CATHOLIC education of our students is why we exist.

This year, we have implemented a pilot program that we have deemed our “Faith Integration Program”. Our goal, as faculty, is to infuse our Catholic faith into all disciplines of the curriculum. This is a “cutting edge” process that we are very proud of. The Diocesan Education Department is very interested in the program that we have created and has asked us to present it to them in February, at the Diocesan Teacher Education Conference. I would like to recognize Mrs. LeeAnne Scovell, one of our faculty members, who has done the research and most of the work to author this program. I would like to commend our entire faculty for the hard work that it has taken to step up to a whole new level, to implement this process in their classrooms each day.

Catholic Virtue Education
Character Education has been a focus at HCCS for a number of years. This year we revised that program to make it a “Catholic” Character Education program, which we have deemed “Catholic Virtue Education”. Catholic Virtue Education focuses on teaching students and their families about our Catholic virtues as they are outlined in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. While all of the virtues, works, gifts and fruits are intricately intertwined into our Catholic Faith, Catholic Virtue Education at our school focuses on certain aspects each month in order to enhance learning for all students, of all abilities, in all grades. Each month a new virtue is highlighted, and the students are involved in defining, discussing and exhibiting that trait in their daily lives. I then include reflections on the monthly virtue in my weekly parent letter to involve the school families and spur discussions and catechesis at home. At the end of the month parents are encouraged to attend a student-directed, all-school assembly focusing on the lessons taught throughout the month.

Monthly Stewardship Projects
Embracing the mission of Holy Cross Parish, our school community teaches and models social justice by “serving the needs of those for whom the world makes no room”. We reach out to those in need with a different service project each month, which assists people and organizations locally, nationally and globally.

Academic excellence
We have outstanding students at HCCS and I am extremely proud of each and every one of them. The students at HCCS are CHALLENGED ACADEMICALLY and EXCELL ACADEMICALLY, at all grade levels. Our standardized test scores reflect this. For example, based on the ITBS standardized test results that we recently received, our 7th grade students composite class score ranked them at a 10th grade equivalent level. All grades that participated in the standardized assessments, scored at least one to two years ahead of their current grade level.

Thank you to the HCCS Faculty and Staff
This academic success is the direct result of the outstanding Faculty and Staff that we have at HCCS. I am truly blessed to work with this outstanding TEAM of educators who have dedicated their lives to the mission of Catholic education. These people truly are ministers of our Catholic faith…although our lay educators do not take a vow of “poverty”…they certainly do not receive the salaries that those who teach in the public sector do. What is most amazing to me is that most of them work close to 50 hours a week at school, they go home and work more, they have very little or no support or special services staff, they have limited resources, and they still absolutely LOVE coming to school every day! I would like to take a moment to recognize any of our school faculty or staff that are in the congregation today. Thank you for your service to Holy Cross!

Thank you to the Holy Cross Parish leadership
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Fr. Tom, Deacon Dick, Deacon Jim, our Parish Trustees, and our Parish leadership committees, Pastoral Council, Finance Council, and the Board of Christian Education, for their ongoing support and commitment to the success of Holy Cross Catholic School. Although having a parish school is a wonderful part of our parish community, it also makes the job of these parish leaders and committees more challenging. One of the most challenging aspects of having a parish school is financially supporting that school. I thank Fr. Tom and these leadership positions and groups for continuing to find ways to support and celebrate our wonderful school.

Thank you to Holy Cross Catholic School families
I would like to thank the families of the students of HCCS for the choice you have made to provide a Catholic education for your children. This is not an easy choice, given the financial demands of society today. I know first hand that some families make significant sacrifices in order to pay the tuition necessary for their children to attend our school. In addition, I would also like to thank the parents of our school children for the hours and hours and hours of volunteer work that they do, to help our school. From fundraisers, dances, field trips, school functions, athletics and activities to lunch duties, these parent and family member volunteers play a vital role in the day to day operation and success of our school. Our school simply would not, and could not, function, without all of the volunteer efforts of our parents. The sacrifices that you parents are making today to provide for your child’s Catholic education, will result not only in the successful future of your child, but the successful future of our Catholic faith, as well.

Thank you Holy Cross Parish members
Most importantly, and frankly the main reason that I wanted to address the parish this weekend, is that I would like to thank each of YOU. YOU, each of our faithful parish members, sitting in the pews, for your support of our school, through your annual sacrificial giving and your generous donations of time, talent and treasure. Thank you for your ongoing support of Catholic education, and for your willingness to continue to support our parish school for the last 139 years. With God’s generous blessing, may we continue to educate children at Holy Cross Catholic School for another 139 years!

I invite you all to come and see what is happening at your parish school. Please join us at our Annual School Open House to kick off Catholic School’s Week, today from 9AM-Noon. We will be taking new student registrations and showcasing our school. Come over and meet the faculty and staff and enjoy children’s entertainer, Will Branch. Everyone is welcome and would really love for you to visit!

Please know that the Holy Cross Catholic School students and their families, and the faculty and staff will be praying for you, our wonderful parish members.

Thank you for listening, and may God bless you!

Holy Cross Catholic School Accepts Registrations at School's Open House

Holy Cross Catholic School kicked off Catholic Schools Week with their annual Open House this past weekend. The Open House is an opportunity for school families, Holy Cross parishioners and prospective students and families to experience first-hand all that the school has to offer. Principal Robin Jo Jensen reports that the event was well-attended, and that new families started turning in their registration materials for the 2008/09 school year at the event.

Other highlights included:
Award-winning children's performer Will Branch entertained the children, while parents checked out the displays, toured the school and socialized.

Volunteers from FAST (Families and Schools Together) sponsored the entertainment and handed out fresh, hot Market Day cookies to those in attendance.

HCCS nutrition staff members, Mrs. Toni Zahn and Mrs. Mary Ver Haagh were on hand to talk about the morning nutrition program, hot lunch and the importance of healthy eating habits.

Below, Art teacher Mrs. Renee Zirbel helps Computer teacher Mrs. Deanna Schauer showcase the C.O.W. (Computers On Wheels). Mrs. Schauer had several laptops set up and logged on to the Holy Cross Catholic School Learning Management Website via the school's wireless internet connection.

The Open House featured displays that detailed the full range of programs and extra-curricular activities available to Holy Cross Catholic School students and families.

Catholic Schools Are Key in the Midst of "Educational Crisis"

Pope Laments "Fragile Generations" Created by Modern Society

VATICAN CITY, JAN. 21, 2008 (Zenit.org).- In the midst of what Benedict XVI calls an "educational crisis," it is important for Catholic schools to maintain their identity.

The Pope affirmed this today when he received in audience participants in the plenary assembly of the Congregation for Catholic Education.

The ecclesiastical disciplines," the Holy Father said, "especially theology, are today subjected to new interrogations in a world tempted, on the one hand, by a rationalism which follows a false idea of freedom unfettered by any religious references and, on the other, by various forms of fundamentalism which, with their incitement to violence and fanaticism, falsify the true essence of religion."

Faced with the educational crisis, Benedict XVI continued, "schools must ask themselves about the mission they are called to undertake in the modern social environment."

Catholic schools, he said, "though open to everyone and respecting the identity of each, cannot but present their own educational, human and Christian perspective."

The Pope contended that schools face a new challenge, that of "the coming together of religions and cultures in the joint search for truth." This means, he said, on the one hand, "not excluding anyone in the name of their cultural or religious background," and on the other "not stopping at the mere recognition" of this cultural or religious difference.

Seminaries
Benedict XVI went on to refer to another theme being examined by the plenary assembly, that of reforming the document "Ratio Fundamentalis Institutionis Sacerdotalis" for seminaries, issued in 1970 and updated in 1985.

Any reform, he said, "will have to highlight the importance of the proper correlation between the various dimensions of priestly formation in the perspective of Church-communion, following the indications of Vatican Council II. [...] The formation of future priests must, furthermore, offer them guidance and help to enter into dialogue with contemporary culture.

"Human and cultural formation must, then, be significantly reinforced and sustained also with the help of modern sciences, because certain destabilising social factors that exist in the world today -- such as the situation of separated families, the educational crisis, widespread violence, etc. -- render new generations fragile."

The Pope concluded by highlighting the need for "adequate formation in the spiritual life so as to make Christian communities, particularly in parishes, ever more aware of their vocation, and capable of providing adequate responses to questions of spirituality, especially as posed by the young. For this to happen, the Church must not lack qualified and responsible apostles and evangelizers."

Ella Cumicek, a remarkable 10-month-old little girl, needs our help. Ella has spent most of her life in the hospital and has been in the operating room over 18 times. Ella and her twin brother, Ethan, were born 12 weeks early in March of 2007. While both her and her brother have had their share of problems being born so early, Ella has really had to fight for her life. Since March, Ella has dealt with underdeveloped lungs, a brain bleed, an intestinal blockage, and Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC). NEC involves infection and inflammation that causes destruction of the bowel. Most recently, Ella and her mother spent 3 months in Boston receiving an experimental procedure to save her liver and her life. In the future, Ella will also need to undergo a kidney transplant. This has been a tough time for Ella’s entire family and has challenged them financially. Not only does she have her twin brother, Ethan, but she has two sisters, Gioia (5) and Brynn (4), and a brother, Mason (3).

Weekly Catholic Virtue Reflection from HCCS Principal Robin Jo Jensen: Goodness and Gentleness

This week's reflection is called "Leafage and Rootage," by Steve Goodie.

American President Woodrow Wilson once pointed out that "a man’s rootage is more important than his leafage." What others see are the leaves, the outside. What they can’t see are the roots, the values and principles that ground a person. Character is grown from a good system of roots...

People of character live from the inside out. Their convictions guide their actions. Their principles govern their lives. People of character have both the strength and grace to give their best to the world.

To their enemy they give forgiveness.
To an outsider, understanding.
To a friend, their heart.
To their children, a good example.
To their mates, faithfulness.
To their parents, respect.
To themselves, gentleness.
To all people, kindness.

Strong roots produce a strong character. And a strong character is needed to give one’s best to life. When the tree’s roots are well tended, the leaves will be full and healthy.

May God bless you,
Robin Jo Jensen

What is Scrip?
When your organization members purchase scrip, they're purchasing negotiable gift certificates that are used just like cash. The scrip is issued by the national and local retailers where many of your organization families already shop. These merchants want to support non-profit organizations, and in return ask you to support them by shopping with scrip at their stores. Your organization members can use scrip to purchase everyday expenses like food, clothing, and other essentials, and with every purchase, they earn revenue for your organization. Goodsearch to Benefit Holy Cross Catholic School

Holy Cross Catholic School is now registered at “GoodSearch”. Supporters of HCCS can now raise money for our school by using GoodSearch.com to search the Internet! GoodSearch.com is a search engine with a unique social mission. Each time you do an Internet search, GoodSearch makes a donation to our school! Simply go to www.goodsearch.com and enter "Holy Cross Catholic School--Green Bay" in the charity field.

About Goodsearch
What if even a fraction of the $8 billion generated by search engine advertisers* was distributed to organizations trying to make the world a better place?

That is the concept behind a new search engine, developed by Internet entrepreneurs and brother sister team Ken and JJ Ramberg. GoodSearch.com – powered by Yahoo – donates 50% of its revenue, approximately a penny per search, to the charities designated by its users. You use it exactly as you would any other search engine and the pennies add up quickly – just 500 people searching four times a day will earn around $7,300 in a year!

More than 40,000 nonprofits are now actively generating revenue via the site and more than 100 new charities and schools are registering daily. GoodSearch has quickly spread via word-of-mouth and the blogger community.

Using GoodSearch is simple. Because the site is powered by Yahoo, users are assured of high quality results - but each time you search, money is generated by the advertisers for your favorite charity or school.

“We know there are a lot of people who want to do good but may not have the time or the money to help out.” said Ken Ramberg, Co-Founder of GoodSearch and former President of MonsterTRAK, the largest online career site for college students (now a division of Monster.com). “GoodSearch makes it as easy as possible. We’ve taken something people do every day -- searching the Internet -- and have turned it into doing good."

In Remembrance of Martin Luther King, Jr.

O Guardian of Israel,
Our shelter and shade,
Stir up in us that flame of justice
That Jesus incited on this earth,
That rages in our hearts by the Holy Spirit.

O arouse in us
That very flame of righteousness
That enticed Martin
To be a living sacrifice of praise,
To seek freedom for all God's children.

O to you, God, ever faithful and true,
Be glory for ever and ever.Amen.

Our Holy Cross Parish Youth Stewardship program is a tool available for us to help teach the basics of stewardship to our youth. Stewardship is a decision we make to live as Christians and to thank God for all of His blessings by helping to take care of the church and the world on behalf of God. Stewardship is often touched upon throughout the Bible and in our faith formation process; the Youth Stewardship Program helps bring all of these teachings together.

Holy Cross Faith Formation Family Newsletter

Greetings from Faith Formation!

Here we are the mid-point of January and the beginning of the 2nd semester of Faith Formation classes. I hope that the Christmas season and the new year has left you refreshed and ready to start anew. As we begin 2008 I'd like to remind you to stop and consider God's wonders. It is amazing that sometimes we can go through a whole day and not realize what the weather is like. Although it would be difficult not to notice the sun that is shining so brightly today!

We can be so focused on ourselves or our work that we fail to see what is going on around us. There are people who have suffered great physical tragedy. When they recover they have a renewed sense of what is important. They always vow to make more time for family, friends, nature and enjoyment. It is good for us to take that advice! God gives us each new day…each new year…to find wonders and pleasure if we just stop and look! Take time to rejoice in the wonders God has placed in your life today!

First Reconciliation Rite of Welcome this Weekend
This weekend at all the Masses we will be formally welcoming and introducing our 2nd graders who are preparing to celebrate First Reconciliation at the end of February. Remember to keep those children and their families in prayer as they experience the compassion and forgiveness of our loving God.

Confirmation is Coming Up!
In almost two weeks our Juniors and Seniors will be celebrating their Confirmation and their full initiation into our Catholic faith. The Confirmation Rehearsal will be on Saturday, Jan. 26, at 10:00am in church. All candidates and their sponsors are required to attend. The Confirmation Celebration will be the following day, on Sunday, January 27, at 2:00pm. Bishop Banks will preside over our Confirmation this year. Please keep our 40 candidates in your prayers as they come to experience the outpouring of the Spirit in their lives and in our community.

Tuition Statements
For those of you who have chosen to pay your tuition in 2 installments, your final payment is now due. Please watch for your statement in the mail.

Lent is Right Around the Corner!
Lent will begin on Wednesday, February 6. There will be no formal Faith Formation classes on that day. All students, families and Catechists are expected to attend our Ash Wednesday Mass at 7:00pm.

Lenten Family Night
There are no regularly scheduled classes for Grades 2 - 11 on this evening! All students in both the Faith Formation and Holy Cross School and their families are invited and encouraged to attend. Come and join us for an evening that will help to make this Lent a meaningful one. Included in this evening will be a meaningful family project that we will share together that evening, along with a take home packet with ideas to make this a special Lent for you and your family. Click here for the Lenten Family Night Registration Form.

Peace and all good,

Fervent Packers fan keeps the faith on mission in Peru

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinal featured a column by Laurel Walker about a die-hard Packer fan serving as a missionary in Peru. Read on for the first few paragraphs of Ms. Walker's column (don't worry, there's a link at the end!):

By Laurel Walker, from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinal.

Lending lift to the legend that you can find Packers fans anywhere, here's further proof.

You'll find them even in Piura, Peru.

Father Joseph Uhen, a Milwaukee native and Catholic missionary priest in the northern Peru archdiocese for 14 1/2 years, is surrounded by poverty and soccer fans. Yet he's brought some G Force to his faithful and staff by his sheer love for the team he's followed since he was a little boy.

"I love working with the poor," he said, "and they are entertained by my enthusiasm for the Green Bay Packers."

I venture a prediction: This fold hasn't seen anything yet, if Packers pride cooperates.

Two years ago, Town of Delafield resident Mike Schmitz and his daughter Megan traveled with other members of St. Anthony on the Lake Parish in the Town of Delafield to their sister church served by Uhen. The local church regularly sends members to Piura, where they add rooms and build houses for the poor, bring food and clothing, visit hospitals and orphanages, and meet families.

Schmitz saw that the good padre suffered from Packers fever, unrelated to equatorial heat. For years before the Internet, Uhen tried to keep up on the team's progress any way he could. Usually, he'd watch games that his parents taped and sent his way - two weeks after they'd been played.

To read the rest of the story click here.
Anyone interested in donating their gently used Packer apparel to the people of Piura, Peru can contact St. Anthony of the Lake Parish at Parish@StAnthony.cc. To learn more about Fr. Joseph Uhen's mission, click here.

Looking Back on the Season of Advent

Submitted by Mrs. Mary Wennesheimer

The third grade class at Holy Cross Catholic School participated in the Advent season by completing many Advent activities. We found that a rich Advent makes for a joyous Christmas!

We used the four weeks before Christmas to prepare for Christ's coming. We created Advent wreathes, participated in Advent lighting services, sang special Advent songs, completed Advent calendars and wore bracelets to remind us that "Jesus is the reason for the season." We received the Sacrament of Reconciliation to prepare ourselves for Jesus' coming.

We also took part in two stewardship projects. We sent Christmas cards to the elderly of our parish and to several Peace Corps volunteers. The third grade class had the honor of coordinating the school's Giving Tree Project. The third graders did an awesome job collecting hats, mittens, socks, books, and educational materials for the needy kindergartens in our community.

We ended the Advent season by asking ourselves--what kind of gift can we give to Jesus for his birthday?

What is Scrip?
When your organization members purchase scrip, they're purchasing negotiable gift certificates that are used just like cash. The scrip is issued by the national and local retailers where many of your organization families already shop. These merchants want to support non-profit organizations, and in return ask you to support them by shopping with scrip at their stores. Your organization members can use scrip to purchase everyday expenses like food, clothing, and other essentials, and with every purchase, they earn revenue for your organization. Vocations Awareness Week: Beloved of God

January 13-18, 2008 is Vocation Awareness Week.

God calls. We respond. Our primary call, from our Baptism, is to know how loved we are by God, and to respond by following Christ.

Within the call to follow Christ, we hear the call to a specific vocation in the way we live our lives. Those calls include vocations to the married life, to the single life, to the consecrated religious life, and to the ordained life.

The Call for Sisters, Brothers and Priests
We know within our Church the need to raise up leaders as sisters, brothers and priests.

In a particular way, we as Church look for the following gifts in young men and women as signs of a possible call from God to the religious life or priesthood. If you know someone in your parish or family who has some of these gifts, please PRAY for them and INVITE them to consider God’s call to the priesthood or consecrated life. God may be calling someone who:

- has a strong personal faith;
- loves people;
- has good physical and emotional health;
- has an enthusiasm for learning and studying;
- has good relationships with men and women and can live a celibate lifestyle;
- is active in the parish;
- has the gifts to serve the Church in leadership.

For more information on priesthood and religious life, visit www.gbvocations.org or call Fr. Tom Long at 920-272-8293.

We are baptized for service!
Within the vocations to the married life and the single life, some people are called to serve in Church ministry. Some are called to lay ministry; others are called through the ordained life to the diaconate.

For more information on Lay Ministry Formation, contact Tony Picher at 920-272-8268. For more information on the Diaconate, contact Deacon Paul Grimm at 920-272-8290. Or toll-free: 1-877-500-3580, ext. 8268 (Lay Ministry Formation) or ext. 8290 (Diaconate).

January 12/13 From the Pastor's Desk...

My Dear Parishioners,

This weekend we celebrate the feast of the Baptism of Jesus Christ and officially and liturgically bring to a close our celebration of the Birth of Christ & Christmas. I do hope that you and your family had a peaceful and wonderful Advent, Christmas and New Year. Along with bringing the holidays to an end is the taking down of Christmas decorations and packing things away until next year. We will do that for our Church decorations after the 10 am Mass this weekend and would appreciate all who would be willing to come and help with this task. The more people we have the quicker the job is accomplished. Please consider your gift of time and talent to this endeavor. One perk in helping – you can adopt a poinsettia plant to take home with you!

Know that Lent and Easter come very early this year – Ash Wednesday is February 6th

Remember to support our Parish Athletic Department’s annual Chili and Bake sale. Chili and baked good will be available on Sunday after the 8 am and 10 am Masses.

A special “Thank You” to all who contributed to the annual Christmas “Flower Fund” – this helps us pay for all the Christmas flowers, etc used to decorate our church. A Bulletin insert will be done in the near future listing all those who contributed and all those in whose memory flowers were given. All were remembered in the Masses I offered during the Christmas Season . A special thank you also to Ron Tillmann who has given us the magnificent Christmas trees that decorated our Sanctuary.

Oremus pro invicem,
Fr Tom H.

Book Review:'Resilient Church' Author Proves the Catholic Church has a Future

By Jean Peerenboom

“The Resilient Church: The Glory, the Shame and the Hope for Tomorrow” by Mike Aquilina (The Word Among Us Press, $11.95).

All the doom and gloom predictions about the state of the Catholic Church are nothing new. Mike Aquilina proves that in “The Resilient Church,” a 176-page overview of church history.

It is a quick overview that may whet your appetite for further study. However, it does hit the highlights of the events and people that shaped the church of today.

It’s amazing the church has survived, but survive is has and the woes of the 1990s and 2000s are a mere bump in the road compared to the Crusades, the Inquisition, the heresies and the kidnapping of Pope Pius VII. Other impacts he reviews are the pagan Romans, the Arians, the Middle Ages, the French Revolution, Communism and secularism. Yet, the church continues to do its work, he writes.

Some of the key people included are the Roman Emperor Nero, St. Ambrose, St. Augustine, St. Benedict, Pope Gregory, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain, Martin Luther, Henry VIII, Our Lady of Guadalupe, Therese Martin, Mussolini and Hitler.

In looking at the 21st century, the author says, “No one could deny that the church is forcing a crisis. But that’s nothing new. If we’ve learned anything from the past 2,000 years, it’s that the church is always facing a crisis … Crises are what drive the church.”

He ends on a hopeful note when he says, “The church will find new energy and the billion faithful will stay true to what they believe.” After all, he says, “The message of the Gospel is timeless.”

“The Resilient Church” is extremely readable. It is not analytical. Nor is it a complete history, but it is worthwhile. It reminds us that God is with us in times of crisis as well as times of joy.

Aquilina is vice president of the St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology and author of more than a dozen books on Catholic history, doctrine and devotion. His Web site is FathersoftheChurch.com.
Next: “The Ten Commandments: Laws of the Heart” by Joan Chittister

Jean Peerenboom is the former religion/books editor from the Green Bay Press Gazette. Jean is currently the volunteer coordinator at the NEW Community Shelter, 301 Mather St., Green Bay, and a candidate with the Sisters of St. Francis of the Holy Cross. She writes a monthly book review for the Holy Cross Family Blogspot.

January 5/6 From the Pastor's Desk...

My dear parishioners,

I do hope that you all had a wonderful Christmas and New Year’s holiday. I certainly enjoyed the time off and relaxed and chilled out. I especially enjoyed the three days of retreat with my brother Norbertines at Saint Norbert Abbey. It was a golden opportunity to be with my Norbertine Community to reflect on the Rule of Saint Augustine, which we live by, and to take time to pray together and also to share thoughts and feelings about where we are in our lives.

Some of you have asked me where we are as a parish in our search to fill the newly created administrative position of “Parish Business Manager.” We had 14 applications for the position and the search committee performed telephone interviews with all 14 applicants. The interviews took place in the form of conference telephone calls. As a result of those interviews the search committee met and evaluated the applicants’ credentials and our evaluation of the interview. As a result of that process we narrowed the pool down to 3-4 applicants who we would like to interview in person. The first of those interviews took place on Friday (1-4-08) and the other interviews will take place this coming week. As a result of the personal interviews the search committee hope to arrive at a number 1, 2 and 3 candidate and then a job offer will be offered. I will keep you up to date on the process and its outcome.

I should also mention that I see in this move to a “Parish Business Manager” another step forward in the re-structuring of how our parish does its business. This is a giant step forward for us and I am quite excited about it. Essentially the Business Manager will work under and with me in handling all of the material aspect of our parish “business.” This will enable the “Priest Pastor” to focus more on the Sacramental, Spiritual life of the parish.

Please mark your calendars for Saturday, February 16th when our Spiritual life Committee sponsors it Annual Celebrate Life Dinner Dance. Details will be appearing in our bulletin during the coming weeks. Why not plan to attend, have an enjoyable dinner, meet and socialize with fellow parishioners, dancing etc. Those who have attended in the past have always had a wonderful time.

Oremus pro invicem,
Fr. Tom H

The Holy Cross Parish Faith Formation program works with parents to answer these questions and to bring our young people into a closer relationship with God; a relationship which motivates them to make good moral decisions in order to live Christ-like lives.

Comments on the second grade: Second grade is an "exciting year preparing for two sacraments; laying the groundwork to begin learning cursive; practicing putting thoughts into written form; reading for enjoyment; practicing being our best and doing our best!"

What I like about Holy Cross Catholic School: "The support and involvement of the HCCS families and parishioners-at-large! Real sense of being a 'family of faith' crossing age and generations!"

Free Time: Sr. Carolyn is involved with her Community of Sisters and likes to spend time with family and friends. She enjoys shopping for bargains, e-mailing friends near and far, reading purposeful materials, watching episodes of Law & Order and watching the PACKERS WIN!!
